Albertans are smart enough to make their own sports choices

EDMONTON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today presented Community Development Minister Gene Zwozdesky with a response to the Alberta Sport Plan Questionnaire, which advocates spending more tax dollars on sports and recreation. The Community Development ministry alone gives away over seven million tax dollars per year to promote and to finance sports and recreation.

Called "Albertans can make their own sports choices," the CTF's nine-page submission makes the case against redistributing provincial tax dollars to sports clubs and recreation facilities.

"Albertans are smart enough to make their own choices about how much money they wish to spend on sports and recreation, and about which kinds of sports and recreation," stated CTF-Alberta director John Carpay.

"The Alberta government should not be in the business of forcing hockey fans to pay for karate, forcing karate participants to pay for swimming lessons, and forcing swimmers to finance hockey. Yet this is exactly what government does when it redistributes tax dollars to various sports clubs and events," added Carpay.
